Philosophy
The St George’s Science Department philosophy is based on high expectations and standards, and the desires to assist all students to achieve their full potential. The Science Department have created an environment that encourages and rewards good behaviour and all achievement; where students feel valued and secure, are inspired and motivated at all ages, abilities and levels. We aim to provide lifelong skills and confident individuals who can exist alongside our ever evolving world.
Key Stage 3 Science is an integrated course which covers biology, chemistry and physics topics. This has proven to be a highly successful approach with Key Stage 3 students repeatedly achieving outstanding results exceeding School Governor, local and National Targets
During KS3 students will study many topics such as cells, energy and chemical reactions. All topics incorporate key scientific methods of study, such as learning to use a microscope.
The course we follow has particular focus on applying the knowledge gained to the world around us, with How Science Works underpinned throughout the whole of KS3
St George’s Science Department provide an outstanding choice of science qualifications at Key Stage 4. Students have the opportunity to choose from 6 GCSE qualifications following the brand new exciting and interactive 21st Century Science Curriculum.
GCSE Science: provides basic knowledge and scientific literacy skills for student to be informed citizens and understand basic science based issues and developments
GCSE Additional: meets the needs of students seeking a deeper understanding of scientific ideas, concepts, explanations and investigation.
GCSE Additional Applied: ideal for students who wish to develop their understanding through a work related context. This course focuses on procedure, technique and underpins the role of science in the world of work.
Triple Science: provides further opportunity to broaden and develop understanding of scientific explanation, How Science Works and has particular relevance to pupils wishing to pursue science A levels or other higher education science qualifications.
All science classes are delivered in a suite of 8 laboratories with KS 4 students being taught Biology, Chemistry and Physics by specific subject specialists
