RE: Mobile Phones
We are writing to outline changes to the Academy’s Mobile Phone Policy, which have recently been approved by the Leadership Team.
Mobile phones have become part of our everyday lives and certainly part of the lives of young people. These devices have many functions which improve our lives. However, they have certain negative consequences when not used properly in a school setting which include:
- Pupils ignoring the existing mobile phone policy which is leading to unnecessary confrontations with staff and disruption to teaching and learning in a small number of lessons.
- Pupils using mobile phones to communicate inappropriately with each other or use social media during the school day.
- Pupils on their phones at break and lunch rather than talking to each other.
- Pupils using headphones, which are not allowed in school, to listen to music stored on their phones.
The school’s new rule on mobile phones, which will be introduced from 2nd July 2018, to address the above concerns is as follows:
The use of mobile phones by pupils during school hours or on school premises is completely forbidden.
If your son or daughter does not follow these rules their mobile phone will be confiscated and they will be sanctioned. In the first instance their device will be returned to them at the end of the school day. If there are any further breaches of the new policy they will face a more serious sanction and the phone will only be returned to a parent or carer. This may not be possible on the same day.
If you need to contact your child urgently during a school day then you may leave a message with the staff in reception who will ensure that your son/daughter receives it. Likewise, should your child need to contact you urgently, this will be arranged through the office. After school ‘end of day’ pupils are allowed to use their phone outside of the school building as they exit the site.
Please can I ask you to speak with your son/daughter regarding mobile phones and emphasise the importance of following the school’s new policy as explained above.
If you have any questions regarding the new policy, please feel free to contact the school.
Thank you in anticipation of your support.
