Prayers Spring Term 2019

Welcome back! We continue to thank you for your prayer support.

Week 15 (w/c 7th January, 2019)
Theme: The Journey

“For I know the plans I have for you”, declares the Lord, “plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.”
Jeremiah 29:11

Our prayer:
O Christ, tirelessly you seek out those who are looking for you and who think that you are far away; teach us, at every moment, to place our spirits in your hands.  While we are still looking for you, already you have found us.  However poor our prayer, you hear us far more than we can imagine or believe.  Thank you Lord.  Amen.
(Brother Roger of Taize)

Week 16 (w/c 14th January, 2019)
Theme: Respecting Difference

Be devoted to one another in love. Honour one another above yourselves.”
Romans 12:10

Our prayer:
God our Father, we have much to learn from other people and especially those who are not the same as ourselves.  Remind us that every person is a reflection of your image, although they might express that differently from us.  Inspire us to respect each and every person we meet seeing and loving in them what you see and love in them.  For Jesus Christ’s sake and in the power of the Spirit, we pray. Amen.

Week 17 (w/c 21st January, 2019)

Our Prayer:
Lord, open our eyes, that we may see you in our brothers and sisters.
Lord, open our ears, that we may hear the cries of the hungry, the cold, the frightened, the oppressed.
Lord, open our hearts, that we may love each other as you love us.
Renew in us your spirit.
Lord, free us and make us one.
Amen
Mother Teresa

Jesus said, ‘This is what I command you: Love each other as I have loved you.’
John 15:12

Our prayer:
Loving God, your Son Jesus came among us and brought healing and wholeness to those he met.  We pray for all cancer charities and especially for Cancer Research UK.  Thank you that their persistence means that some cancers are being defeated and some patients are living longer.  Please bless those who are trying to rid the world of this awful illness and in the meantime may the power of your Holy Spirit comfort all those who suffer. Amen.

Week 20 (w/c 11th February, 2019)

Our bible verse:
“The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”
1 Samuel 16:7

Our prayer:
Loving God, you have made human beings three dimensional with depth, breadth and height to who we are.  Please forgive us when we look at others and see only two dimensions.  Help us to look beyond the surface to see people for who they really are.  Amen.

Happy Half Term Holiday!

Week 21 (w/c 25th February, 2019)

Matthew 5:13-14

Our prayer:
Lord Jesus, you called your followers to be salt and light in the world: salt to bring flavour and add meaning to life; light to shine in dark places bringing guidance and hope.  May we be salt and light to the communities in which we live, so that our neighbours can praise your name.  Amen.

Our bible verse:
‘But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.’
Romans 5:8

Our prayer
Loving God, help me to be wise by learning from the mistakes I make in life instead of just repeating them.  Thank you that because of Jesus I am forgiven and because of Jesus I can have new life.  By the power of your Holy Spirit, teach me to make better choices and walk along fresh paths.  Amen

Our prayer:
O God, we pray for all those in our world who are suffering from injustice:
For those who are discriminated against because of their race, colour or religion;
for those deprived of reasonable health and education;
for those too weak to help themselves and who have no one else to help them.
We pray for anyone of our acquaintance who is personally affected by injustice.
Forgive us, Lord, if we unwittingly share in the conditions or in a system that perpetuates injustice.
Show us how we can serve your children and make your love practical by washing their feet.  Amen.
(An abbreviated prayer by Mother Teresa)

Week 24 (w/c 18th March, 2019)
Theme: Year 8 Charity Week – RSPCA
(Christian value = Service)

Our bible verse:
God blessed them and said, “Have many children, so that your descendants will live all over the earth and bring it under their control. I am putting you in charge of the fish, the birds, and all the wild animals. I have provided all kinds of grain and all kinds of fruit for you to eat; 30 but for all the wild animals and for all the birds I have provided grass and leafy plants for food”—and it was done. God looked at everything he had made, and he was very pleased. Evening passed and morning came—that was the sixth day.
Genesis 1:28-31

Our prayer:
Lord God,
Who made the earth and every living creature,
help us to treat with compassion
the animals entrusted to our care,
that they may not suffer from our neglect
nor become victims of any cruelty;
and grant that in caring for them
we may find a deeper understanding of Your love
for creation, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Week 25 (w/c 25th March, 2019)
Theme – Who is my neighbour?

Our bible verse:
‘Let each of you look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others.’
Philippians 2:4

Our prayer:
Love Your Neighbour’ Prayer

Oh Lord, our Father,
In a world turn apart by fear and suspicion,
Teach us your children that Love is the only means to conquer fear:
The Love we encounter as we search you out,
The Love we encounter as we accept your embrace.
Oh Lord, the Son,
In a world full of anger and frustration,
Teach us, your servants, your friends, your sisters and your brothers,
To overturn the tables and tear down the fences
Which turn away the hungry and homeless:
To feed and house the disciple that knocks on our door
In the guise of the stranger,
And to find the Love we seek in loving others.
Oh Lord, the Holy Spirit,
Mother of Wisdom,
Teach us, your children, to be caring of one another,
To protect one another,
As you gather the nations under the feathers of your wings.
Help us to know peace that steals gently in through quiet acts of kindness.
Amen

Our bible verse:
‘Jesus said, “Father, forgive them. They don’t know what they are doing.”’
Luke 23:34

Our prayer:
Loving God, I bring before you the struggles I have with forgiveness.
I look at your life and your teaching and know that you would want me to forgive.
I pray for the help of your Holy Spirit to give me the strength and courage I need.
For Jesus Christ’s sake I pray.
Amen.

With our best wishes for a good break over the Easter holiday.
