Direct Instruction was developed as a very efficient and effective way to enable children to learn, particularly to develop pupil literacy and numeracy.

DI is a teacher-led instructional method to rapidly improve pupil performance.  Lessons are highly scripted and the teacher carefully and clearly guides pupils in their learning. The programme is characterised by pupils learning from examples and grasping the concept before they move on.

Pupils practice continually and for extended periods until they have mastered the learning. Sequences of content are carefully developed to ensure learning is efficient and effective. There is high paced questioning, continuous feedback and rapid correction of misconception.
