We are delighted to share the news that, for the first time ever at St. George's, our Year 9 cohort completed their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award this year as part of the elective enrichment programme. Over 200 pupils have worked extremely hard to achieve their Certificate of Achievement completing the Skill, Physical and Volunteering sections of the Bronze Award. Pupils were also encouraged to take the opportunity to complete the Expedition section so that they could achieve their Bronze Award. Over 80 of our pupils signed up and received further training in preparation for their overnight expedition to Waddecar Scout Camp.
During both expeditions our pupils displayed exemplary behaviour, commitment, resilience, teamwork and leadership. They really have been a credit to themselves and the academy. They have endured a steep learning curve, however, all pupils have risen to the challenge making it a real pleasure for the 8 leaders involved to see pupils working so well outside of the classroom.
Our pupils had to demonstrate being totally self-sufficient, navigating 2 days of walking (up to 16km per day), whilst carrying all of their kit and food with them. They cooked their own meals, pitched their tents and planned their walking routes across a range of open countryside.
Many muscles are aching, blisters created and most importantly memories to last! Already many have said they can not wait to undertake their Silver Award next year!
