St George's Career Journey

Supporting your child’s career choices.

Knowing where to start to support your child with their career choices can be a bit of a challenge.  With changes to qualifications and courses and such a wide range of options it can be difficult knowing where to begin.   This page and the other careers pages have been created to help you support your child’s careers journey.

A starting point can be to understand the qualifications on offer and how they progress on form each other.  The diagram below takes you from GCSE to postgraduate level.

What do the 9-1 grades mean?

Since September 2017, the way GCSEs are graded has changed, moving from the alphabetical system of A*-G grades to the numerical 9-1 system.

In the numerical grading system:

  • 9 is higher than a current A*
  • 8 is between an A* and A.
  • 7 is equal to an A
  • 6 is equivalent to a high B
  • 5 is between a B and C
  • 4 is equal to a grade C
  • 3 is in between a D and E
  • 2 is between an E and F
  • 1 is a G
  • U refers to an ungraded paper
