Careers Programme Information
At St George's, we are committed to raising the aspirations of all of our pupils. Through our Christian values, we aim to ensure that all members of our community are aspirational and seek to positively impact upon each other and society. One of our fundamental aims is to equip pupils with the self-development and career management skills needed to fully prepare them for the workplace and empower them to make informed choices about their next steps in education or training.
Every student at St George's is encouraged to set their sights high for their futures, regardless of their background or individual circumstances, promoting a culture of equality of opportunity. Our Careers programme supports this process through a wide range of activities including careers education delivered through Morning Meetings and the PSHE programme, guest speakers, career guidance drop-ins, encounters with external stakeholders, and trips and visits to colleges and universities.
The programme equips pupils with the knowledge and experience necessary to make the transition from school to a university, college, apprenticeship, or the career of their choice. This programme provides statutory independent careers guidance beginning in Year 7. It provides opportunities, careers information, advice, and completely impartial guidance so that all pupils are aware of the full range of academic and technical options available to them. The St George's Careers Pathway, which is structured to build upon previous years across the Key Stages, can be seen in detail below.
Of course, preparation for a successful transition into further education and careers is not limited to career-focused sessions: we aim to develop the fundamental skills for a successful career (such as teamwork, communication, cooperation and problem solving) as part of our curriculum and pedagogy in all academic subjects.
- Guest Speakers and Employer Encounters: St George's offers pupils a varied range of guest speakers and encounters with external stakeholders. These are progressive through the age range and tailored to individual needs so that pupils can build up a rich picture of the working world and understand the employability skills, experience, and qualifications that employers require. In line with the Skills and Post-16 Act 2022, we provide a minimum of 6 encounters with technical education or training providers to all pupils between years 8 and 13. Specifically, pupils at St George’s will have a minimum of 2 encounters between years 8 and 9, followed by a further 2 encounters between years 10 and 11.
- College and University Taster Days: Pupils are encouraged to take a proactive and independent approach to their post-16 options. Throughout Key Stage 4, pupils are supported through college taster days, university visits, and careers conventions to experience life in further education before making their applications. We are proud to support our pupils as they prepare to progress to excellent local destinations, including Blackpool Sixth Form, Blackpool and the Fylde College, and Cardinal Newman.
- Unifrog: We use the Unifrog online platform to integrate comprehensive careers and further education advice into our support for pupils.
- Work Experience and Volunteering: All pupils are directed towards opportunities to explore the workplace, which includes taking part in virtual work experience and college visits during Key Stage 4.
- Management of Provider Access Requests Procedure: St George's can arrange access for providers to speak to pupils at the school for the purpose of giving them information about the provider’s education or training offer. This complies with the school’s legal obligations under Section 42B of the Education Act 1997, also known as the 'Baker Clause'.

Futures - Destinations
At St George’s, our highly experienced Careers department provides expert guidance to support pupils in getting where they want to go next, helping them to understand routes to careers they are interested in and to make informed choices about their next step in education or training. Offering comprehensive support throughout the school for their career ambitions, our Futures team advises pupils on university choices, course applications, apprenticeships, gap years, and future career options. We are proud to support our pupils as they progress to excellent local destinations, including Blackpool Sixth Form, Blackpool and the Fylde College, and Cardinal Newman.
